Objectives

  1. Describe the clinical features of mumps and the characteristics of the mumps virus.
  2. Describe the body’s immune response to infection with the mumps virus, with focus on the cell-mediated response.
  3. Describe the MMR vaccine.
  4. Discuss the reasons for the rising incidence of mumps.
  5. Discuss the costs and benefits of mass immunisation programmes.

Incidence of Mumps Increase : It only became general practice to provide a second "booster" MMR in 1996 for children, thus many young adults who would have been older children around 1996 are less likely to have received this second booster. In situations such as University Halls of Residence, many young people inhabit the same environment and thus chances of infection are higher.
